1 INTRODUCTION

The IEEE Signal Processing Society, formerly the Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing Society has sponsored an International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing (ICASSP) annually since 1976.

This manual was created to help future Conference Committees organize and run successful ICASSPs. It is part guide and part instruction, a combination of experience and ideas. It will grow more valuable as successive Conference Committees use it and contribute their experience and ideas to it.

The manual comprises 14 chapters and 7 appendices. Although the leadership of an ICASSP needs to be familiar with the whole manual, most of the sections can stand alone. These may be reproduced and distributed to the relevant parties. The authors have tried to make all the parts of this manual fit together, but there are some inconsistencies that future editions will have to correct.

The first edition of the ICASSP Conference Committee Manual was written by two members of the SP (then the ASSP) Conference Board. It incorporates suggestions they received from a number of people associated with previous ICASSPs, plus some of the authors' own thinking. The authors would appreciate constructive criticism and other feedback that would enable them to improve this manual.
